ESG Procedure: What to Expect Before, During, and After

Before: preparing for the day

Preparation begins well before the procedure itself. After your assessment confirms ESG is suitable, the medical team will guide you through:

• Pre-procedure checks. Depending on your health, this may include blood tests or other simple evaluations so the team has a full picture.
• Medication review. Some medicines may need adjusting beforehand; the team will tell you exactly what to do.
• Fasting. You will be asked not to eat or drink for a set period before the procedure so the stomach is empty. Clear instructions are given in advance.
• Arranging your day. Because sedation is used, you should plan for someone to accompany you home and take the rest of the day to rest.

There are no external incisions to prepare wound care for - one of the practical advantages of an endoscopic (through-the-mouth) approach.

During: what happens step by step

ESG is carried out under sedation, so you are comfortable and not aware of the procedure while it takes place. Here is the sequence in plain terms:

1. Sedation. You are settled and sedated by the team so you feel nothing during the procedure.

2. The endoscope goes in. A thin, flexible camera (the endoscope) is passed gently through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach. No cuts are made on your body.

3. Suturing. A suturing device attached to the endoscope places a pattern of stitches in the stomach wall. These stitches fold the stomach inward, reshaping it into a narrower sleeve so it holds less.

4. Checking the result. The team confirms the new shape and that everything looks as intended before finishing.

The procedure is typically completed within a single session, and because it uses internationally accredited techniques and equipment, the process is carefully controlled from start to finish.

After: the first hours

When the procedure is done, you rest in a recovery area while the sedation wears off. A few things to expect:

• Observation. The team monitors you for a period to make sure you are comfortable and stable.
• Going home. Most patients can return home the same day. You will not be able to drive yourself, so having someone with you is important.
• Mild sensations. Some people notice mild nausea, cramping, or a feeling of fullness in the first day or two. These sensations are common as the stomach adjusts, and the team will explain what is normal and what to watch for.
• Starting with liquids. Eating does not resume normally straight away. You begin with liquids and progress in stages over the following weeks, guided by the team.

The days that follow

The reshaped stomach needs time to settle, so the period immediately after focuses on gentle progression rather than pushing to eat normally. You will receive a clear, staged plan and follow-up appointments so nothing is left to guesswork. Recovery experiences differ, but many people recover quickly and return to light routines within a short time.
