TAME (trans-arterial micro-embolization) is a minimally invasive, image-guided option for some chronic joint and tendon pain. Learn how it works.

Ключевые выводы

  • For stubborn joint or tendon pain that has not settled with the usual measures, TAME is a newer, minimally invasive option that works in an unusual way - through the blood vessels rather than the joint itself. This article explains what TAME is, the idea behind it, and who might consider it, in plain language.

What is TAME?

TAME stands for trans-arterial micro-embolization. Breaking that down:

  • Trans-arterial = the procedure is carried out through a small blood vessel (an artery).
  • Micro-embolization = tiny particles are used to gently and temporarily reduce a small amount of abnormal blood flow.

In areas of chronic inflammation, the body can form small, abnormal new blood vessels. These are thought to feed ongoing inflammation and to travel alongside small nerve fibers that carry pain signals. TAME aims to calm this abnormal blood flow, and in doing so, to relieve pain and improve function in the affected joint or tendon.

At YOUNIFY Clinic, TAME is performed by our pain medicine team as an image-guided, needle-only procedure - there is no open surgery.

What TAME may be considered for

TAME has been used for various sources of chronic musculoskeletal pain, including:

  • Persistent knee pain, such as that related to osteoarthritis.
  • Certain shoulder conditions, including some cases of stubborn "frozen shoulder."
  • Chronic tendon pain, such as tennis elbow or other long-standing tendon problems.

It is generally considered when pain has persisted despite rest, activity modification, physical therapy and other measures, and when a person prefers to avoid or is not ready for surgery. Suitability depends on your diagnosis, imaging and overall health.

How the procedure works - step by step

1. The skin over a small access point is cleaned and numbed.

2. A very fine tube (catheter) is guided through a small artery using imaging guidance.

3. The doctor identifies the tiny abnormal vessels feeding the painful area.

4. A small amount of micro-particles is delivered to gently reduce that abnormal flow.

5. The catheter is removed and the access point is cared for.

Because it works through the blood vessels, there is no incision into the joint. Most patients go home the same day with specific aftercare advice.

What to expect afterward

Recovery experiences vary. Many people are advised to take it easy for a short period and to look after the small access site. Relief from TAME often builds gradually over weeks rather than appearing straight away, as inflammation settles. Your team will explain the expected timeline and arrange follow-up to review how you respond.

What results to expect - honestly

TAME aims to relieve pain and improve function in suitable patients. It is not a cure, and it does not reverse underlying joint changes such as established arthritis. Response and how long benefit lasts vary between individuals, and evidence for TAME is still developing across different conditions. It is best understood as one option within a broader plan that continues to include activity, rehabilitation and, where appropriate, other treatments.

How TAME differs from injections

Unlike a joint or epidural injection, which places medicine directly at the target, TAME works by modifying the small abnormal blood vessels that feed chronic inflammation. This makes it a distinct option - sometimes considered when injections and conservative care have not given enough relief. Which approach fits you is a discussion for your assessment.

Who should be assessed first

Because TAME involves accessing the arterial system, careful selection matters. Our medical team reviews your history, imaging and overall health to judge whether TAME is appropriate, and will explain the potential benefits and risks in full so you can make an informed choice.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is TAME surgery?

No. It is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure performed through a small blood vessel, with same-day discharge in most cases - not open surgery.

How soon will I feel better?

Often not immediately. Relief tends to build over weeks as inflammation settles. Response varies between individuals.

Will TAME cure my arthritis?

No. TAME aims to relieve pain and improve function; it does not reverse underlying joint changes. It is one option within a broader plan.
