A week-by-week look at GAE recovery: what to expect from day one through the first months, and when pain relief tends to appear.

Điểm Chính Cần Nhớ

  • One of the appeals of genicular artery embolization (GAE) - the minimally invasive treatment that blocks tiny abnormal blood vessels in an arthritic knee to reduce pain - is that recovery is generally gentle. Still, it helps to know roughly what to expect. Here is a general week-by-week picture. Everyone is different, so treat this as a guide, not a schedule.

Day 0: the day of the procedure

Because GAE is done through a tiny pinhole rather than an open cut, most patients can return home the same day after a period of monitoring.

  • Expect a small dressing at the access site (thigh or wrist).
  • Mild knee warmth, ache, or slight swelling is common as the treated area settles.
  • You will usually be advised to rest the leg and avoid strenuous activity for the first day or two.

Days 1-3: settling in

The first few days are about rest and gentle movement.

  • Discomfort in the knee may peak and then ease; simple pain relief usually keeps it manageable.
  • Light walking around the home is generally encouraged to keep the leg moving, unless you are told otherwise.
  • Keep the access site clean and dry as instructed. A small bruise is normal.
  • Avoid heavy lifting, sport, and long periods on your feet.

Week 1: returning to light routine

By the end of the first week, many people are back to light day-to-day activities.

  • Everyday tasks and gentle walking are usually comfortable for many.
  • Any residual ache or swelling continues to fade for most.
  • Follow your team's advice on when to resume driving, work, and exercise - this depends on your job and how you feel.

Many people recover quickly, but there is no single right pace.

Weeks 2-4: building back up

  • Activity gradually increases. Most people ease back into their normal routine and light exercise over these weeks.
  • Pain relief may start to become noticeable for some during this window, as inflammation in the joint lining calms down. For others it comes later.
  • Your team may check in to see how the knee is responding.

Weeks 4-12: the relief window

GAE is not an instant switch, and the benefit often builds over time.

  • Some people notice steady improvement in pain and function through this period.
  • This is a good time to keep up the basics that protect the joint - sensible movement, strengthening, and weight management - which support any relief you gain.
  • If the response is partial or slow, discuss it at follow-up; not everyone responds the same way.

Beyond three months: the longer view

Where GAE works, relief may last several years in some cases, typically 1-5 years, though results vary by individual. It is important to remember what GAE does and does not do: it aims to reduce pain from inflammation, but it does not regrow cartilage or cure the arthritis. Looking after the joint over the long term still matters, and some people may consider further treatment down the line.

What should prompt a call to your team

Recovery is usually smooth, but contact your medical team promptly if you notice things like increasing pain, spreading redness or heat, fever, significant swelling, bleeding at the access site, or changes in color or sensation of the foot. Câu hỏi thường gặp

How soon can I go back to work?

Many people return to light or desk-based work within a few days to a week, depending on how they feel. Physically demanding jobs may need longer. Follow your team's advice.

When will I feel less pain?

It varies. Some notice improvement within days to a few weeks; for others it builds gradually over the following weeks. Relief is not guaranteed and varies by individual.

Do I need physiotherapy afterwards?

Keeping the knee moving and maintaining strength generally supports recovery. Your team can advise whether structured physiotherapy would help in your case.
