  • Vaccinations are not only for children. As adults, our protection from some vaccines fades, new ones become relevant with age, and travel can add extra needs. This guide explains the common adult vaccinations and how they fit into a wider preventive-care plan.

Why preventive care matters in adulthood

Preventive care is about staying well rather than only treating illness. It combines vaccinations, health screening, and everyday habits to reduce risk and catch issues early. No single step removes all risk, but together they make a real difference - and a check-up is a natural moment to review all three.

Common adult vaccinations

Which vaccines you need depends on your age, health, past vaccinations, and lifestyle. Your doctor will personalise this, but commonly discussed vaccines include:

Influenza (flu)

An annual flu vaccine is widely recommended for most adults, and updated each year. It is especially worth considering for older adults, pregnant women, and people with long-term conditions.

Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap/Td)

Protection wanes over time, so a booster is typically suggested every ten years, or sooner after certain wounds.

Hepatitis A and B

These protect against liver infections. They are often relevant for travelers, people with certain risk factors, and anyone not previously vaccinated.

Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)

Some adults may need this if they are not already immune, particularly before travel.

HPV (human papillomavirus)

Relevant for eligible younger adults; your doctor will advise based on age and history.

Vaccines more relevant with age

Depending on age and health, your doctor may discuss vaccines such as pneumococcal (against certain pneumonia-causing bacteria) and shingles.

COVID-19

Guidance is updated over time; your doctor can advise what is currently recommended for you.

This is a general overview, not a personal schedule. The right vaccines and timing are decided with your doctor.

Travel vaccinations

Bangkok is a hub for regional and long-haul travel, so it is a practical place to plan ahead. Depending on where you are going, you might discuss vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, or others, and precautions for illnesses like malaria or dengue. Some travel vaccines need more than one dose over several weeks, so it is wise to review your plans well before you leave.

Preventive care beyond vaccines

Vaccinations are one pillar. A complete preventive plan also includes:

  • Health screening - blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and age-appropriate cancer screening such as colon screening. See what is in a complete health check-up.
  • Lifestyle - not smoking, moderating alcohol, staying active, eating well, sleep, and stress.
  • Dental and eye checks - easy to overlook but part of staying well.

Bringing these together in one review means nothing important slips through the cracks.

How to keep track

A simple record helps a lot. Keep a note of which vaccines you have had and when, bring it to your check-up, and let your doctor flag anything due. If you are an expat or frequent traveler, this record is especially useful across borders.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

I do not know my vaccination history - what should I do?

That is common. Bring whatever records you have, and your doctor can advise. In some cases a blood test can check whether you are already immune, and some vaccines can be safely repeated if records are missing.

Do I really need a flu shot every year?

Flu viruses change, and protection fades, so an annual vaccine is generally recommended for most adults. Your doctor will confirm what is right for you.

How far ahead should I plan travel vaccines?

Ideally several weeks, since some need multiple doses spaced out. If your trip is soon, we can still advise on the most useful options in the time available.
