Ключевые выводы

  • A colonoscopy is one of the most useful tools we have for looking after bowel health, yet the preparation is what puts many people off. This guide explains when a colonoscopy is usually considered, how often it might be repeated, and exactly how the prep works - so there are no surprises.

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an examination in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera (a colonoscope) is passed gently into the large bowel (colon) to view the lining on a screen. If small growths called polyps are found, they can often be removed during the same examination - and because some polyps can slowly turn into cancer over years, removing them is a meaningful, preventive step. Screening helps find issues early and reduce risk; it does not remove all risk.

When to start

Many international guidelines suggest that people at average risk consider colon screening from around age 45 to 50. But this is a starting point for a conversation, not a fixed rule. You may be advised to start earlier if you have:

  • A family history of bowel cancer or polyps.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Certain inherited conditions.
  • Symptoms such as ongoing changes in bowel habit, bleeding, or unexplained weight loss.

Your doctor will personalise the right starting age for you based on your history.

How often

The interval between colonoscopies depends on what is found:

  • If the examination is normal and you are at average risk, many guidelines suggest a repeat after several years (often around ten).
  • If polyps are found and removed, or you have higher risk, your doctor will recommend a shorter interval.

There is no single answer that fits everyone - your doctor will set a schedule based on your results and risk.

Understanding the bowel prep

The prep is the part patients worry about most, so here is what actually happens. The goal is simple: the colon needs to be completely clean so the camera can see clearly.

A few days before

You will usually be asked to reduce high-fiber foods (nuts, seeds, raw vegetables, whole grains) and avoid certain items so the bowel empties more easily. We will confirm any medication changes, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines - never stop these on your own.

The day before

You will move to a clear-liquid diet (water, clear broth, clear juices without pulp, plain tea). You will then drink a prescribed laxative solution that empties the bowel. This causes frequent, watery bowel movements over several hours, so plan to stay home near a bathroom. It is not comfortable, but it is temporary and it is what makes the test accurate.

Tips that help

  • Chill the solution and sip steadily; use a straw if the taste bothers you.
  • Stay hydrated with clear fluids.
  • Have wet wipes and a barrier cream ready for comfort.

The day of the procedure

The examination itself is usually short - often around 20 to 30 minutes.

1. You will confirm your history and consent.

2. Sedation is commonly offered, so most people are relaxed or lightly asleep and remember little of it. It is usually well tolerated.

3. The doctor examines the colon and removes any polyps found.

4. You rest until the sedation wears off. Most people go home the same day.

If you had sedation, arrange for someone to take you home and do not drive that day. You may feel a little bloated with air afterwards, which settles quickly.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is the colonoscopy itself uncomfortable?

With sedation, most people feel little during the examination and it is generally well tolerated. We cannot promise it will be entirely free of discomfort, but comfort options are always discussed beforehand.

Is the prep really that bad?

It is inconvenient rather than dangerous - expect several hours near a bathroom the day before. Following the instructions closely makes the test more accurate and less likely to need repeating.

What if a polyp is found?

Removing polyps during the examination is routine and is one of the main reasons colonoscopy is so valuable. Any tissue is sent for analysis and reviewed with you.
